Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was an influential American-born French entertainer, renowned for her singing, dancing, and acting. Rising to fame in the 1920s, Baker became a symbol of the Jazz Age and a star in Paris. Her signature performance in the “Banana Skirt” became iconic. Offstage, Baker was a Civil Rights advocate and World War II spy. She was the first Black woman to star in a major film. Baker’s legacy, both artistic and activist, is internationally recognized.
