Michal Boym (1612–1659) was a Polish Jesuit missionary, scientist, and explorer. An early Western traveller in China, he was among the first to document the natural world of East Asia for European audiences, writing on Chinese fauna, flora, medicine, and geography—uniting science with cross‑cultural understanding.
His best‑known work, Flora Sinensis (“Chinese Flora”), printed in Vienna in 1656, became Europe’s first detailed account of the Far Eastern ecosystem. Boym emphasized the medicinal richness of China’s plants and combined Latin taxonomy with Chinese characters, creating a rare early exchange between knowledge systems.
