La Samaritaine is a landmark building in Paris, renowned for its unique blend of Art Nouveau and Art Deco design and recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. But why is the building named “La Samaritaine”? The history of La Samaritaine dates back to the late 19th century and is located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.
The name originates from a water pump that was located on the Pont Neuf during the reign of King Henri IV (1603). The pump provided water to the Louvre district and was decorated with a depiction of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, as told in the Gospel of John. Although the pump and its statue underwent multiple rebuilds and restorations, they were eventually dismantled in 1813 and replaced by floating public baths.
