He gave the world timeless standards like “‘Round Midnight” — the most recorded jazz composition by a single artist — and “Straight, No Chaser,” earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1993) and a special Pulitzer Prize (2006), and appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964. The second-most-recorded jazz composer in history after Duke Ellington, Monk remains an icon without equal.
