He didn’t just hold down the rhythm — he was the foundation the music stood on.
This vintage jazz print captures Percy Heath on upright bass with the Modern Jazz Quartet in Amsterdam, October 24, 1959, photographed by Anefo. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1923, Heath trained as a Tuskegee Airman before dedicating his life to music — and what a life it became. As the MJQ’s bassist from 1952, he brought quiet authority and impeccable time to one of jazz’s most refined ensembles, playing alongside John Lewis, Milt Jackson, and Connie Kay, and recording with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker.
