He didn’t just play the trumpet — he invented what jazz could be.
This vintage jazz print captures Louis Armstrong mid-performance — trumpet to his lips, dark suit, white hat — photographed by William P. Gottlieb at the Aquarium in New York City, ca. July 1946. Nicknamed “Satchmo” and “Pops,” Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901 and went on to transform jazz from a collective art into a soloist’s triumph. This is the image of a man completely in his element: pure sound, pure soul.
