He didn’t just play the guitar — he reinvented it.

This Django Reinhardt jazz poster captures the Belgian-born guitar legend at the Aquarium in New York City, November 1946 — photographed by William P. Gottlieb during his landmark tour with Duke Ellington, an image that graced the cover of Down Beat magazine and became one of the most iconic portraits in jazz history. After a fire destroyed the use of two fingers on his left hand, Reinhardt taught himself an entirely new technique — fusing swing, gypsy jazz, and classical influences into a sound so singular it changed what the guitar could do. Co-founder of the Quintette du Hot Club de France with Stéphane Grappelli, and collaborator with Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter, he remains the first great jazz voice to emerge from Europe.
