He didn’t just play the baritone saxophone — he reinvented what it could sound like.
This jazz music poster features a striking portrait of Gerry Mulligan — baritone saxophone in hand, dark suit, caught in profile mid-performance — photographed by William P. Gottlieb ca. 1980. Born in Queens, New York in 1927, Mulligan helped shape the sound of an era: his arrangements for Miles Davis’ landmark Birth of the Cool sessions in 1949 became the blueprint for cool jazz, and his pianoless quartet with Chet Baker in the early 1950s remains one of the most inventive ensembles in jazz history. He won the Down Beat reader’s poll as best baritone saxophonist for 42 consecutive years — a record that speaks for itself.
