He didn’t just play the saxophone — he towered over every stage he ever graced, in every sense of the word.
This captivating jazz music poster captures “Long Tall Dexter” — Dexter Gordon — mid-performance at a dress rehearsal for the AVRO Edison Awards concert at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht, October 28, 1980, photographed by Rob Bogaerts. Born in Los Angeles in 1923, Gordon was one of the defining voices of bebop and a foundational early influence on both John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. He lived and performed across Europe for 14 years before his legendary 1976 homecoming at New York’s Village Vanguard. His album Go is in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, and his role in the 1986 film Round Midnight earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor — the first jazz musician ever nominated.
