Tex Beneke (1914-2000) was an American saxophonist, singer, and bandleader who played a prominent role in the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. He is best known for his work as the lead saxophonist and male vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, one of the most popular and successful bands of the era. After Miller’s death in 1944, Beneke took over leadership of the band and continued to perform and record under his own name. Beneke’s music was characterized by its swinging rhythms, memorable melodies, and tight arrangements, and he remained an important figure in the big band jazz scene for many years.
