The Austin Healey Sprite was an affordable sports car that gained popularity among enthusiasts worldwide. Its distinctive “frogeye” or “bugeye” headlamps were originally intended to be retractable but due to cost, they were kept in place, becoming a defining feature of the car. Despite its basic design, which was mainly a blend of Austin A35 and Morris Minor, the Sprite was a fun and reasonably performing car due to its lightweight. However, its lack of amenities, such as a trunk, led to more sophisticated versions.
In 1961, the Sprite received an upgrade with the Mark 2, modernizing it and making it more practical. However, this also diminished some of its unique character. The Mark 2 had a larger 1098cc engine and front disc brakes and was still affordable and enjoyable. The ultimate Sprite, the Mark 4, was introduced in 1966 with a 1275cc engine producing 65bhp and a top speed of near 100mph. The 1969 update included black sills and Rostyle wheels. Unfortunately, the end of BMC’s partnership with Healey in 1971 led to the final production of the Austin Sprite. Its sibling, the MG Midget, continued to sell until 1979.
Our poster, featuring the Austin Healey Sprite, would be a great addition to any car enthusiast’s collection and a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate minimalist wall decor.
