Duke Ellington premiered his jazz symphony ‘Black, Brown, and Beige’ at his Carnegie Hall debut in 1943, leading to annual concerts where he debuted new works. At his 1968 concert, civil rights leader Robert Moses announced the shooting of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the concert became a tribute to his memory. Ellington’s final Carnegie Hall concert was in 1972, two years before his death.
