Alphonse Mucha’s posters were instrumental in making Art Nouveau a mainstream phenomenon. After creating a lithograph for French actress Sarah Bernhardt’s play “Gismonda” in 1895, Mucha became an overnight sensation. Although he didn’t identify as an Art Nouveau artist, his iconic female figures became a hallmark of the movement.
